Opening the Gates to Future Expansion

Implementing a Scalable, Future-Proof Solution at the Port Esbjerg

As one of the largest ports in Denmark, Port Esbjerg plays a critical role in maritime logistics, offshore wind operations, and regional infrastructure. With increasing vessel traffic, evolving security requirements, and the integration of new drone-based activities, the port embarked on a major initiative to modernize its control room as part of an EU-backed upgrade program. For Motilde, the port’s chosen solution provider, the objective was clear: transform a fragmented display environment into a unified, scalable, and future-ready control room platform designed to support the port’s long-term strategic ambitions.

Challenge

Prior to the upgrade, the control room relied heavily on direct video outputs from physical servers running Milestone VMS, combined with a mix of independently managed sources. Cameras were configured within Milestone, and their physical outputs were extended to the video wall using HDMI distribution. Additional web pages and physical sources were added in an ad hoc manner.

This fragmented architecture presented several challenges:

  • Limited flexibility: Layout changes required manual reconfiguration.
  • Scalability constraints: Adding new sources or accommodating future systems—such as drone operations—was subject to complex implementation.
  • Loss of operational efficiency: Multiple keyboards and control points were required to manage different systems.
  • Security and network segmentation concerns: The port needed strict separation between operational domains (e.g., port management and drone activities), while still sharing information on the video wall.

As an additional challenge, the control room was evolving from a single-operator setup to a four-operator environment, with future integration planned for drone surveillance and potentially other external stakeholders. The solution had to work today—and be ready for tomorrow.

Solution

Motilde, VuWall’s long-time system integration partner in France, conducted a detailed ergonomic and technical study to define the port’s operational needs. They selected VuWall’s AV-over-IP solution, the TRx centralized platform, to ensure maximum flexibility and long-term scalability.

The deployment included:

  • 16x 46″ displays, resulting in an 8×2 video wall spanning nearly 7 meters.
  • VuStream 350 IP KVM encoders and PAK video wall and KVM nodes to manage physical and IP-based sources and displays.
  • Integration with Milestone VMS via the TRx plugin.
  • Web-based sources managed by VuWall’s Application Server.
  • Centralized control of the video wall with TRx, accessible via a ControlVu touch panel.
What they really liked about VuWall's solution in addition to the performance, flexibility, and ease of use, is the scalability — today they need to handle a certain number of sources and devices, but tomorrow they will have to integrate new systems into the same control room, and it’s seamlessly feasible with this solution.

Results

Only a few months after installation, the new control room at Port Esbjerg was already delivering measurable improvements:

1. Greater Operational Flexibility | Operators can switch entire wall layouts at the press of a button, adapting instantly to changing maritime, weather or traffic conditions. Instead of permanently displaying dozens of camera feeds, the team can dynamically prioritize information based on real-time needs.

2. Simplified Control | The video wall is managed through a centralized control interface—streamlining daily operations and reducing complexity.

3. Future-Ready Infrastructure | The AV-over-IP architecture allows the port to scale by simply adding encoders, decoders, or new sources. Upcoming drone operations, additional surveillance feeds, or integration with other agencies can be easily incorporated without replacing the core system.

4. Long-Term Strategic Value | For the port’s IT leadership, the most significant benefit lies in what comes next: event management capabilities, expanded source integration, and cross-domain collaboration. The solution is not a “one-and-done” installation—it is a platform designed to evolve.

Conclusion

By modernizing its control room with VuWall’s scalable AV-over-IP ecosystem, Port Esbjerg has transformed a fragmented display environment into a unified, adaptable operations hub. More than a technology upgrade, the project represents a strategic investment in long-term resilience—ensuring the control room can grow alongside the port’s expanding role in maritime logistics, offshore energy, and advanced surveillance operations.
