With energy prices rising globally and no signs of slowing down, businesses have a greater incentive than ever to reduce their carbon footprint and cut operational costs. While individual efforts at home make a difference, optimizing energy consumption at an industrial level can lead to significant financial and environmental benefits. However, before energy use can be reduced, specialists must gain a comprehensive view of how a building operates. Only with real-time insights can engineers develop effective, data-driven strategies to improve efficiency. Managing this across thousands of buildings connected to a single Remote Operations Centre (ROC) presents a unique challenge.
That’s where David Jenkins, Director of ROC, Smart Buildings & Scotland at learnd, leads the way. Overseeing a team of skilled professionals, his division provides nationwide smart building solutions, integrating multi-vendor systems while managing operations across Scotland. “At learnd, we have full control both remotely and through our on-site engineering capabilities. This allows us to optimize energy usage—not only by switching equipment off at the right times but also by doing so intelligently, ensuring buildings operate with a significantly smaller carbon footprint,” said Jenkins.
As part of a major expansion, David’s team partnered with Trust, a managed service provider, to relocate their Remote Operation Centre (ROC) from Stockport to Glasgow. The new facility 7-8 times larger than its predecessor, required the right technology to support both immediate growth and long-term potential growth.
learnd collaborates closely with the National Grid, not only to reduce energy consumption—cutting costs for customers—but also to empower them as energy generators. Through learnd’s solutions, customers can sell excess energy back to the grid, turning sustainability into a revenue opportunity. This made real-time visibility into each customer’s energy usage an absolute necessity.
Beyond technology, the construction of a cutting-edge ROC underscored learnd’s commitment to continuous investment in its customers, reinforcing its role as an industry leader in smart energy management.
“Following a series of consultations with Trust, we selected a solution built on the VuWall platform. The selection matched our vision based on our established requirements, futureproofing and cost. We then moved to a live demo which delivered the functionality we needed.”
David’s team wanted the ROC’s primary video wall to be a focal point in the new flagship centre and make a statement. They wanted to be able to showcase learnd for customers, while meeting their operational requirements.
Today, the video wall is a vital tool for displaying key operational information related to important benchmarks and SLAs, such as case response times, call answer speeds, and the energy savings achieved for each customer through a proactive approach. By showcasing this data in real time, the video wall helps the team maintain focus on continuous improvement, surpassing targets, and consistently meeting customer SLAs.
The video wall creates a truly dynamic environment, which motivates the learnd team to push the envelope, exceed targets, and achieve high performance. “With VuWall’s control console, the team can effortlessly switch between different types of systems and dashboards using preset templates. The solution is sleek, user-friendly, and flexible enough to meet our evolving business needs,” explains David.
The project was executed flawlessly, from the design phase to installation and final handover. The learnd team was highly impressed with the seamless process and praised their partners for their professionalism and commitment to ensuring a smooth delivery from start to finish.
“The video wall management solution had to be scalable, flexible, and future proof. And that is exactly what Trust provided us with the VuWall technology.”
“The team at Trust was exceptional — professional, reliable, and fully committed throughout the project. We had a dedicated point of contact, ensuring clear communication and s smooth installation that met all our requirements. That alone speaks to our satisfaction as a customer. I would highly recommend them to anyone and genuinely look forward to working with them again in the future.”
learnd was founded in 2020 to disrupt the way buildings operate by providing energy and cost savings at scale. Now supporting 1 in 15 buildings across the UK and Ireland, their customers save up to 20% on their energy and costs through a combination of traditional BMS services, and an overlay of technology. This combination of BMS expertise and technology creates the learnd ecosystem, and allows our customers to bring their BMS out of the basement by giving them instant visibility, access, and control of their BMS data.
Trust is a leading UK-based provider of IT infrastructure and end-to-end managed services, with a special focus on retail solutions. They have a proven track record of delivering scalable, robust, and secure solutions that help businesses future-proof their operations and compete in a rapidly evolving market.
